Simple from the first call.

Whether you're calling for yourself or for someone you love — the process is the same, and we take care of everything.

01

Tell us about your parent

We start with a warm phone conversation — their personality, their interests, their daily rhythms. The more we know, the better the match.

02

We introduce the right companion

We hand-pick a companion whose personality genuinely complements your parent. One of our coordinators attends the first visit in person — no stranger arrives alone.

03

Weekly visits begin

Visits happen on a schedule you choose together. After every visit, you receive a brief note so you always know how things went — without having to be there.

A real companion, not a checklist.

We're not a care agency — we're a companion service. Our visits look like what a good friend does.

A proper cup of tea
Sitting down, slowing down, and actually talking. Conversation is underrated medicine.
🚶
A walk at their pace
Even a short walk around the block does wonders for mood, sleep, and physical health.
🛒
Grocery shopping together
Not just getting the groceries done — enjoying the outing, making choices, feeling capable.
🃏
Cards, puzzles & games
Cribbage, Scrabble, chess, crosswords — whatever they love. Mental engagement matters.
🏥
Doctor's appointments
Someone calm and present in the waiting room and in the appointment if needed.
📺
Watching TV together
The same show is completely different when you can talk about it. Company transforms everything.

Important: We do not provide personal care (bathing, dressing, medication management). We are a social companionship service.

Hearthside works for
both of you.

👨‍👩‍👧
For adult children
Arranging for a parent

Your parent is doing well — but you can see the days getting quieter. They're not unwell, they're just alone more than is good for them. You can't always be there, and you know it.

Hearthside gives you a way to do something about it without uprooting anyone's life. A companion visits regularly, does the things your parent enjoys, and sends you a brief note after every visit so you know how they are.

  • You arrange everything — your parent doesn't have to lift a finger to get started
  • After-visit notes keep you informed without you having to call every day
  • Our coordinator attends the first visit personally
  • If the match isn't right, we rematch — no questions asked

For seniors
Signing up for yourself

You're independent, you're fine — and you'd just like someone to spend time with. Someone who shows up regularly, who remembers what you said last week, and who genuinely wants to be there.

You don't need your children to arrange this. You can call us directly, set things up exactly how you want them, and decide what — if anything — you want to share with your family. It's your service.

  • Call us yourself — no family member needs to be involved
  • You choose the schedule, the activities, and how often visits happen
  • You decide whether family receives visit updates
  • No long-term commitment — try one visit and see how it feels

"Within three weeks of Sarah starting, Dad was calling me to tell me what they'd talked about. He hadn't initiated a call in months."

"I called Hearthside myself. My daughter had nothing to do with it. I wanted company on my own terms, and that's exactly what I got. Sarah comes on Tuesdays and I look forward to it all week."

"I was very independent my whole life and I didn't want my sons fussing over me. Hearthside was my idea, my decision. I arranged it, I chose the schedule. It's been eight months and I wouldn't change a thing."

Ready to make a difference?

Tell us a little about yourself — we'll be in touch within one business day.

Answers before you call.

The questions we hear most often — answered honestly.

Are companions background-checked?
Yes. Every Hearthside companion holds a current vulnerable sector criminal record check — the specific check required for working with vulnerable adults in Canada — and valid first aid and CPR certification. Both are renewed regularly.
Is Hearthside a home care agency?
No. Hearthside is a social companionship service. Our companions do not provide personal care, administer medication, or perform household tasks. We provide what clinical care rarely covers: consistent, warm human connection.
How quickly can you start?
From your first call, we typically have a companion matched and a first visit booked within 10–14 days. We call back within 2 hours of every enquiry.
Are there long-term contracts?
None. You can adjust your plan or cancel with two weeks' notice. We earn your continued trust visit by visit — no lock-in required.
What if the companion isn't the right fit?
We rematch. It happens, and there's no awkwardness about it. Tell us what didn't feel right and we will find someone better suited. Getting the match right is the most important thing we do.
How will I know what happened during a visit?
After every visit, your companion submits a brief note covering mood, activities, and anything worth knowing. If a family member arranged the service, they receive this note. If you signed up yourself, you choose who — if anyone — receives updates. The notes can go to you alone, to a family member, or to both. Entirely your choice.
Do you serve Edmonton as well as Calgary?
Yes. Hearthside now serves both Calgary and Edmonton. Call or email us and we will confirm companion availability in your area.
How is Hearthside insured?
Hearthside carries commercial general liability insurance. All companions operate as contracted service providers under our coverage. We are happy to provide a certificate of insurance on request.
Can I sign up without involving my family?
Absolutely. Many Hearthside clients arrange their own service independently. You call us, you choose the companion, you set the schedule. Whether your family knows is entirely your decision — we will not contact them without your permission. This is your service.
I'm not sure I need this — I'm perfectly capable on my own.
Most of our self-referred clients feel exactly this way. Hearthside is not a care service and it is not for people who are struggling. It is for people who are doing well and would simply enjoy having someone to spend time with regularly. There is no threshold of need you have to meet. If the idea of a weekly visitor sounds appealing, that is reason enough to call.

One call.
That's all it takes.

Whether you're arranging this for a parent or for yourself — a short conversation is all we need. No pressure, no commitment.
